Module 6 – Digital telecommunication networks, radio and satellite communications, GSM, NGN

The module Digital telecommunication networks, radio and satellite communications, GSM, NGN deals with the convergence of Time Division Multiplex (TDM) networks and Internet Protocols (IP) networks. The concept and architecture of the convergence networks and NGN (Next Generation Networks) are described in this module. Two conceptions of the NGN architecture are presented: Softswitch architecture and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architecture. In the module are presented the access network technologies (technologies over metalic, optical, radio, mobile and satellite transmission media), as well as transport network technologies (IP/MPLS (Internet Protocol/Multi Protocol Label Switching) platform, ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy). Examples of the configuration of the NGN based on softswitch and IMS architecture are described in two case studies.

Module Objectives

After completion this module successfully attendant will be capable of taking responsibility in the field of Next Generation Network platform architectures and configurations (NGN softswitch based architecture, NGN IMS based architecture and evolution trends), gateways and protocols. They obtain also the basic knowledge in the field of access network technologies, technologies of transport networks and multimedia services and applications provided by converged technologies and NGN.
